(DALLAS-FT. WORTH, TEXAS — DFW Retirement Planning News) Many of us remember “The Tortoise and the Hare,” the fable credited to the ancient Greek storyteller, Aesop. The story contrasts the strategy and ethics of two very different characters, a slow moving and unassuming tortoise and the super-speedy and boisterous hare. Britni Levensailor, Senior Planner at DFW Retirement Planners, recently brought this famous fable into a discussion on her weekly radio program, DFW Retirement Radio on 820 WBAP Radio.
In retirement, Levensailor says, the stock market has many of the characteristics of the infamous hare. She said, “The market gets all the headlines and attention, just like the hare. But as in Aesop’s story of the famous race, slow and steady is a more predictable and dependable strategy. And, ultimately just like in the story, slow and steady wins the race. At our firm, DFW Retirement Planners, our clients really enjoy life in retirement as a “Tortoise.” They like steady and predictable as opposed to the crazy fluctuations that we see in the US stock market. We have a name for this strategy and it’s the “Sleep Well at Night” retirement plan.”
The alternative to the fast moving stock market that Levensailor refers to is the world of alternative investments. She added, “When you’re in or near retirement, you don’t have time to recover from a big market correction. Alternative investments are not traded on an exchange so they don’t correlate with the US stock market and as a result are better strategy for people who can’t afford a sudden, significant loss to their portfolio. During times of crazy market volatility I regularly hear from clients who say ‘Thank you for getting me out of the market.'”
