Why Do I Need Estate Planning?
Having a solid estate plan in place ensures that your wealth and assets will be distributed according to your wishes in the event of your death. If you don’t have an estate plan in place, your money, assets and property can get tied up in the court systems, who will then decide how it gets distributed. Most people would prefer to have control over how their estate is distributed rather than leaving it up to the probate court to decide.
When you think about estate planning, one of the first things that come to mind is a will. A will not only takes care of wealth and asset distribution but it’s also essential to have in place if you have minor children that will need care after your passing. In your will, you’ll select a guardian for your children, along with other provisions regarding their care.
What Options Do I Have?
While the will is a large part of estate planning, it’s not the only document or plan that you’ll want to have in place. Estate planning goes above and beyond wills and may include:
Power of Attorney – A Power of Attorney is a legal document which appoints someone to make decisions for you in the event that you’re no longer able to make decisions for yourself. Your Power of Attorney will be able to sign legal documents for you and manage your assets.
Advanced Health Care Directives – An Advanced Health Care Directive states how you want your health care managed in the event that you’re not able to make decisions. There are also different options for Advanced Health Care Directives that we’ll be happy to speak with you about to ensure that you’re getting the protection that you need and want.
Trusts – Trusts are not just for the wealthy; they can be set up to manage funds for your children and to also minimize tax liabilities on your assets.
Every person has different needs when it comes to estate planning. Your property and assets will often change over time and therefore it’s an area that needs to be reviewed on a regular basis to make sure that it’s up to date. At DFW Retirement Planners, we will help walk you through the process of estate planning. Your unique needs will be assessed so that the proper plan can be put into place and you can feel confident that your estate is going to be distributed how as you see fit.
