Stocks
When you purchase stocks, you’re purchasing shares of a company. The price per share is going to depend on the amount of money that’s invested in the company. There are two different types of stock: common stock and preferred stock. If you own common stock, you typically receive voting rights in regards to corporate decisions. In you have preferred stock, you don’t get voting rights but you’re usually entitled to receive dividends prior to dividends being issued to other stockholders. The value of the stock that you hold will vary depending on the stock market unless you hold private stock in a company that isn’t publicly traded.
Bonds
With bonds, the entity who issues the bond sets the rate of interest that will be paid once the bond matures. The three common types of bonds are U.S. Treasury bonds, corporate bonds and municipal bonds. With bonds, you don’t have equity at stake like you do with stocks.
Mutual Funds
A mutual fund is an investment that includes funds from several investors. These funds are then used to purchase or invest in stocks, bonds, money market accounts or other assets. One of the best benefits of mutual funds is that they give small investors the opportunity to invest in diversified portfolios that are professionally managed. This gives people the opportunity to invest a small amount of capital, which without a mutual fund, they wouldn’t likely be able to do.
